IDB
The Islamic Development Bank is an international financial institution established in pursuance of the Declaration of Intent issued by the Conference of Finance Ministers of Muslim Countries held in Jeddah in DhulQ’adah 1393H, corresponding to December 1973. The Inaugural Meeting of the Board of Governors took place in Rajab 1395H, corresponding to July 1975, and the Bank was formally opened on 15 Shawwal 1395H corresponding to 20 October 1975.
The purpose of the Bank is to foster the economic development and social progress of member countries and Muslim communities individually as well as jointly in accordance with the principles of Shari’ah i.e., Islamic Law.
The functions of the Bank are to participate in equity capital and grant loans for productive projects and enterprises besides providing financial assistance to member countries in other forms for economic and social development. The Bank is also required to establish and operate special funds for specific purposes including a fund for assistance to Muslim communities in non-member countries, in addition to setting up trust funds. The Bank is authorized to accept deposits and to mobilize financial resources through Shari’ah compatible modes. It is also charged with the responsibility of assisting in the promotion of foreign trade especially in capital goods, among member countries; providing technical assistance to member countries; and extending training facilities for personnel engaged in development activities in Muslim countries to conform to the Shari’ah.
The present membership of the Bank consists of 56 countries. The basic condition for membership is that the prospective member country should be a member of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), pay its contribution to the capital of the Bank and be willing to accept such terms and conditions as may be decided upon by the IDB Board of Governors.
ICD
The Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD) is a multilateral organization affiliated with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Group. Its authorized capital stands at $2.0 billion, of which $1.0 billion is available for subscription. Its shareholders consist of the IDB, 52 member countries, and five public financial institutions. Headquarters in Jeddah, ICD was established by the IDB Board of Governors during its 24th annual meeting held in Jeddah in Rajab 1420H (November 1999).
The mandate of ICD is to support the economic development of its member countries through provision of finance to private sector projects in accordance with the principles of the Shari’a law. ICD finances projects that are specifically geared to creating employment opportunities and boosting exports. Furthermore, ICD mobilizes additional resources for projects and encourages the development of Islamic financing and capital markets. It also attracts co-financiers for its projects and provides advice to governments and private sector groups on policies aimed at encouraging the establishment, expansion and modernization of private enterprises, development of capital markets, best management practices and enhancing the role of market economy.
Projects financed by ICD are selected on the basis of their contribution to economic development considering factors such as creation of employment opportunities and contribution to exports. ICD operates to complement the activities of IDB in member countries and also that of national financial institutions.

Ijara Management Company (IMC) was launched in November 2010 and is a 100% subsidiary of the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector (ICD). It aims to assist in setting up of successful Ijara Companies across the ICD member countries and beyond.
